International Academic Session on ‘Advances in Multiple Myeloma Treatment’ Held at BMU

As part of the Evidence-Based Clinical Oncology Lecture Series, an international academic session titled ‘Advances in Multiple Myeloma Treatment’ was held at the Department of Clinical Oncology, Bangladesh Medical University (BMU). The event was organized today, Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at the Department of Clinical Oncology.

The keynote speaker at the meeting was Professor Dr. Andrew Robert Branagan, MD, PhD, a hematologist and medical oncologist at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), USA. He highlighted recent scientific advances in the latest treatment of multiple myeloma, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, CAR-T cell therapy, toxicity management, and survivorship care.

BMU's Honorable Treasurer Professor Nahrin Akhtar was present as the chief guest at the event. She said that cancer is increasing rapidly in Bangladesh. Genomics, bio-bank, clinical trials, palliative care and nuclear medicine are very necessary to ensure modern treatment. Therefore, establishing a full-fledged Cancer Research Institute at BMU is the need of the hour. She directed to prepare a full proposal and present it to the university authorities quickly.

At this time, Professor Dr Syed Md Akram Hossain, Chairman of the Department of Clinical Oncology, outlined the plan to establish a national standard cancer research institute at BMU. The proposed institute will include Molecular and Genomic Research, Cancer Bio-Bank and National Cancer Registry, Clinical Trial Unit, AI and Digital Oncology, and INMAS-BMU Nuclear Medicine Branch (PET-CT, ASPECT, Radionuclide Therapy).

In addition, he also presented a research plan integrating Gynecological Oncology, Pediatric Hemato-Oncology, Palliative Medicine, Hematology, Oncology, Head-Neck Onco Surgery, Neuro-Oncology, Palliative Medicine, Radiology, Pathology, Public Health and Informatics.

Chairman of the Department of Hematology, Professor Dr. Md. Rafiquzzaman Khan and residents of the Department of Clinical Oncology, Hematology were present.

Residents of the Department of Clinical Oncology of BMU, FCPS and MD residents of Rajshahi Medical College, Khwaja Yunus Ali Medical College, Combined Military Hospital, National Cancer Research Institute also participated.

Experts believe that the establishment of this institute will bring major progress in modern, affordable and research-based cancer treatment in the country.
